2005 Glaetzer “Amon-Ra” Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia

    Jeb Dunnuck 98

    Review Date: 05/2010

A monumental wine, the 2005 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley is from dry-grown 100-110 year-old Shiraz vines and spends 14 months in 100% new oak, of which 20% is American and 80% French (70% hogsheads & 30% barrique.) The wine offers fresh, clean aromatics of peppered blackberry and raspberry fruit, bramble, licorice and cedar. A touch of chocolate creeps in with air. On the palate it’s full bodied with a rich, broad texture that remains light and fresh, perfect balance, fresh acids and a blockbuster finish where the wine shows savory, edgy tannin.

    Amon-Ra 2009

96 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate:  Deep purple-black colored, the 2009 Amon-Ra has pronounced creme de cassis and blueberry tart aromas over notes of raw meat, fertile loam, yeast extract and cloves. More elegant in the mouth, it has a medium to firm level of very fine tannins, vibrant and fresh acid that lingers nicely through a long and fruity finish. It is approachable now and will cellar to 2025+.

    Amon-Ra 2010

    Parker (97)

“Deep purple-black in color, the 2010 Amon-Ra is very closed on the nose showing pure black fruits, chocolate and licorice with just a touch of loam. Full-bodied and densely packed, the voluptuous palate is framed by firm, fine tannins and a crisp acid line. It has a long, well-balanced finish. Drink it from 2014-2026+.”

    Amon-ra 2018

98 point, RobertParker.com: “Certainly one of the best vintages of young Amon Ra I’ve ever tasted, the 2018 Amon Ra Shiraz is a stupendous effort. From old vines in the Ebenezer section of the northern Barossa, it starts off with a whirlwind of mocha, blackberry and dried spices, then actually gets more red-fruited as it sits in the glass. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated without being jammy or overdone, the wine finishes long and savory, framed by dusty tannins and mouthwatering black olives. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer compares 2018 to 2004 (which continues to drink well). Expect the 2018 to drink well young, but easily age through 2035, perhaps longer.”

    Behrens Family Homeland 2013

    Parker(96)  Galloni(93)

    Chateau Margaux 2000 (Magnum)

    Parker (99)

Tasted blind, the 2000 Chateau Margaux was a reminder of the peaks that the millennial vintage could reach. Noticeably deep in color, the bouquet rivets you to the seat with copious red berry fruit, clove and truffle, hints of cedar emerging with time. As the aromatics open and aerate, the fruit profile seems to darken and manifests blackcurrants and bilberries. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin. There is immense depth and symmetry conveyed by this First Growth, quite masculine for the estate with a gentle but insistent grip. It is a brilliant wine that flirts with perfection. Afford it another 3-4 years if you can, because it will last decades.

    Dal Forno Amarone 2004

    Parker (98)

“The 2004 Amarone della Valpolicella is one of the most monumental young wines I have ever tasted. This is an especially silky, elegant Amarone from Dal Forno that avoids the heaviness of some previous vintages. Blackberry jam, crushed rocks, minerals, violets, new leather and bittersweet chocolate are some of the nuances that emerge over time. This is every bit as majestic as it was every time I tasted it from barrel over the last few years. The silky, exceptionally polished tannins make the 2004 approachable today, but the wine will be even better in a few years. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.”

    G.B. Crane Vineyard MMXIII 2013

    Parker (98)

“The 2013 G. B. Crane Cabernet Sauvignon Composition is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petite Sirah and 2% Merlot. This is a big boy at 15.3% natural alcohol. Nevertheless, there’s no heat to it. It is a seamless classic from Napa, with copious quantities of blackberry and blackcurrant, some Asian spice and a full-bodied, nearly massive entry on the palate, with oodles of fruit, glycerin and extract. Tannins are present, but soft and well-integrated. This is a big, juicy, compelling effort from Dave Phinney that should drink well for 30 or more years.”

  • view Monfortino 2004 100 point

    Giacomo Conterno Monfortino 2004

Parker (100) “The 2004 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is drop-dead gorgeous. I have tasted the wine multiple times from barrel and three times from bottle and never been anything less than blown away. The 2004 is a subtle, layered Monfortino that captures the sheer elegance and finesse of this great vintage. It is sweet, perfumed, silky and utterly mind-blowing. From barrel it has always been a 100 point wine, but it has just been bottled and naturally a bit closed in on itself. Still, with some time in the glass its silky, perfumed fruit and dazzling class come to life. The 2004 is remarkably harmonious for such a young wine. Readers will have much fun debating which is the greatest Monfortino of recent years. Could it be the 1996, 1999 or 2002 for their huge structure and classicism? Or, is it the 1997 for its opulence? What if the dark horse 1998 and 2000 steal the show? Personally, I adore the 2001 and 2004 for their completeness, but the 2004 is the sexiest of them all. Sadly, 2004 is also the year Giovanni Conterno passed away, but one can’t escape the feeling his spirit lives in this wine. Kudos to Roberto Conterno and his team for this magnificent, thrilling Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2044.

    Giacomo Conterno Monfortino 2006

    Robert Parker (99)

Tasted from botte number 45, the 2006 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is gorgeous. Roberto tells me, “Monfortino is not a drinking wine, it’s a chewing wine.” His comment makes perfect sense and offers incredible insight into the profound beauty beholden before us. You almost feel the crunch of the young tannin and the snap of its presence in the mouth. The bouquet is perfectly matched to the wine. Elegance and finesse add contrast to the wine’s sheer power and determination. Dried rose, licorice, tar, spice and tobacco show immense definition and focus. The 2006 vintage is noted for its extraordinary aging potential. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2045.
